1. Who we are

Playdates (playdates.app) is a tennis matchmaking platform that helps recreational players find compatible opponents, schedule matches, and build a local tennis community. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect when you use Playdates, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.

2. What information we collect

Account information

When you create an account you provide your name, email address, and a password (or you sign in with Google OAuth, in which case Google provides your name and email). We store your email address to identify your account and send you notifications.

Age confirmation

Playdates is intended for adults only. When you create an account, you must affirmatively confirm that you are 18 years of age or older and agree to this Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service before your account is created. We do not collect your date of birth — only this one-time yes/no confirmation, recorded with a timestamp. See Section 8 for more on our approach to age and children's privacy.

Profile information

During profile setup you provide a general age category (e.g. “18+” or “55+”), gender, NTRP skill level, preferred playzones, playing preferences (singles, doubles, social, competitive), and a profile photo. This information is used to match you with compatible opponents and is visible to other players on the platform.

Availability and location

You provide specific date and time windows when you are available to play, and you select the playzones (by name) where you want to play. We use this information to match you with other available players. You can set availability slots as visible to everyone or to your Playmates only.

Match history and scores

We record the matches you participate in, including the match type, date, time, playzone, your opponents or partners, and any scores you submit. This history is visible to you and the other match participants.

Messages

If you use the in-app messaging feature, the content of those messages is stored so they can be displayed to the participants in that conversation.

Notification preferences

We store your choices about which notification categories (match proposals, Playmate requests, match confirmations, marketing) you want to receive and through which channels (in-app, email).

Usage data

Standard server and application logs may record your IP address, browser type, the pages you visit, and error events. This data is used to maintain and improve the service.

3. How we use your information

  • Matchmaking: Your availability, skill level, preferred playzones, and playing preferences are the inputs to our matchmaking system, which proposes matches with compatible players.
  • Account management: Your email and account credentials are used for authentication and account security.
  • Notifications: We send you in-app and email notifications about match proposals, confirmations, and Playmate requests, according to your preferences.
  • Player discovery: Your public profile (name, skill level, age, preferred playzones) is visible to other players on the platform so they can find and connect with you.
  • Service improvement: Aggregated, anonymized usage data helps us understand how the platform is used and where we can improve it.

4. Who we share your information with

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the service providers we use to operate the platform:

  • Google Firebase (Google LLC) — authentication, real-time database (Firestore), file storage (Firebase Storage), and serverless computing (Cloud Functions). Firebase is our primary infrastructure provider. Google's privacy policy applies to data processed on Firebase: policies.google.com/privacy.
  • SendGrid (Twilio Inc.) — email notification delivery. Your email address is shared with SendGrid only for the purpose of delivering transactional notifications you have opted into.
  • Meta Platforms, Inc. (Facebook/Instagram) — via the Meta Pixel, used on our marketing site and in the web app to measure the effectiveness of our advertising and build audiences for future campaigns. See Section 5, “Cookies and tracking technologies,” for what this shares and how to opt out. Meta's privacy policy applies to data it processes: facebook.com/privacy/policy.

We may also disclose your information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users.

5. Cookies and tracking technologies

We use the Meta Pixel (Meta Platforms, Inc.) on our marketing pages (playdates.app) and on the web app (web.playdates.app) to measure the effectiveness of our advertising and build audiences for future ad campaigns. It runs on every page of both sites, including pages only reachable once you're signed in. The Pixel sets cookies in your browser and shares information with Meta including the pages you visit, your browser and device information, and the fact that a given browser session visited a given page — it does not share your Playdates account credentials, messages, or match data.

We also use Google Analytics (via Firebase, part of Google LLC) in the web app to understand how the platform is used. It sets similar cookies and shares standard usage/device data with Google; Google's privacy policy (linked in Section 4) applies to this data as well.

We do not currently use any other third-party advertising or analytics cookies beyond these two.

6. Data retention

We retain your account and profile information for as long as you have an active account. Past availability slots and expired match proposals are automatically cleaned up by the system. You can request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time (see Section 7).

7. Your rights

Depending on where you are located, you may have the following rights regarding your personal information:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correction: Update or correct inaccurate information through your profile settings.
  • Deletion: Request that we delete your account and all associated personal information. To request deletion, email support@playdates.app from the address associated with your account.
  • Withdrawal of consent: You can stop receiving email notifications at any time through your notification settings.

If you are located in Canada, these rights are governed by the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). If you are in the European Economic Area, your rights are governed by the GDPR. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@playdates.app.

8. Children's privacy

Playdates is intended for adults only and is not directed to children. You must be at least 18 years old to create an account, and you are required to affirmatively confirm this before your account is created (see Section 2, “Age confirmation”). We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we will terminate the account and delete the associated personal information. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us immediately at support@playdates.app and we will investigate and delete it promptly.

9. Security

We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted data transmission (HTTPS), Firebase security rules that enforce row-level access control, and rate limiting on authentication to protect your account. No system is completely secure; we encourage you to use a strong, unique password and to notify us promptly if you suspect unauthorized access.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, for material changes, notify you by email or in-app notification.
